Wide-open spaces, fishing and boating await at Amarugia Highlands Conservation Area.

Amarugia Highlands Conservation Area is located in a region once known as "The Kingdom of Amarugia," where a group of people formed their own government and had their own society. A series of prominent hills in this region is still known as the Amarugia Highlands.

The Conservation area includes 1,081-acres. Its main attraction is a 45-acre man-made lake called Amarugia Lake. The lake is stocked with largemouth bass, channel catfish, bluegill, and redear sunfish. The area is a popular spot for anglers and even provides a boat ramp for those that wish to enjoy a day on the water. In addition to Amarugia Lake, the area also has numerous small ponds and a short stretch of the South Grand River.

The area features mostly open lands such as fields and grasslands, although there are some woodland areas contained within the area boundaries. Visitors will find a variety of flora and fauna in the area, making it a popular spot for nature photographers.

Visitors should note that there are no official hiking trails in at Amarugia. The conservation department generally keeps the perimeter around the lake mowed, which makes it possible for visitors to take a stroll in the grassy areas around the water. (It should be noted that if the weather has been particularly wet, the footpath is difficult to mow and may have taller grass than normal.)

There are multiple parking lots available both at the perimeter of the conservation area and around the lake. A bathroom is available near the boat ramp on the west side of the lake. The website provides a detailed map of the area and is a good resource for first-time visitors!

Our work in Baltimore is truly a family affair. Husband and wife, Matt and Katie, work together to head up our ambassador team in Charm City. Katie is a Maryland native and has lived in the state her whole life. She moved to Baltimore in 2007 after graduating from the University of Maryland, College Park with a bachelor's degree in early childhood education. She has been working in the field of early childhood education as a teacher and family coach for the past 12 years. Katie also holds a Masters of Education in Literacy from Loyola University. She is passionate about giving kids and families the knowledge and tools that they need to thrive. Matt grew up in the Highlandtown neighborhood of Baltimore. As a city native, Matt is a great resource on all that the city has to offer. After months of helping Katie explore the city for her role at a Happy Active Family, he decided to put his love of writing to use and officially come on board as an ambassador. Matt and Katie have two girls, ages 5 and 7. They spend their weekends camping, hiking, or exploring other hidden gems in their area. Tap into their insider knowledge by downloading the app today!
