The Riverwalk, Chicago’s “second lakeshore," makes for a fun-filled experience downtown where you can take in the world-class architecture and river views, and enjoy great food and culture.
This 1.25 mile path along the main branch of the Chicago River offers a ton of fun activities!
While enjoying your walk, not only can you get a great view of the buildings and the river, but you can enjoy public art displayed throughout. Make sure to visit the Community Marketplace which aims to showcase small, neighborhood businesses and inspire visits to neighborhood locations “reflective of cultural diversity and neighborhoods of the City of Chicago.”
Art on theMART is another really cool initiative that boasts the largest permanent digital art projection in the world. Seven days a week from mid-May to late September, digital art is projected on the side of theMART. Projections begin approximately 15 minutes after sunset. Every year on St. Patrick's Day, Chicago dyes the water of the river green to celebrate the Irish holiday. The view of the city over the bright green river is unforgettable.
There are several places to stop and enjoy the scenery while grabbing a drink or a beverage. The full list is here.
Dogs are ok on a leash. Bikes are also ok but there are designated locations where bikes must be walked.
No elevators at present but there are ADA-compliant ramps providing a vertical connection from Upper Wacker and the Riverwalk.
- East side of State Street
- West side of Clark Street.
- West side of Franklin Street
The Chicago Riverwalk is a fun way to experience some of the cities' culture and vibrancy. This could also be a very entertaining place to go for a run, but be sure you are good at dodging people as it can be very crowded. This is a great option for those who have little ones that don't love to sit still and want to see lots of different things at once.
