Elk Rock Garden is an English-style garden overlooking the Willamette River and Mt. Hood.
Elk Rock Garden (also called the garden of the Bishop's Close) is located in a lovely Dunthrope neighborhood about two miles north of Lake Oswego. The 13 acres are on the bluffs overlooking the Willamette River and also Mount Hood on a clear day.
Peter Kerr moved from Scotland to Portland in 1888 and started the garden in 1916. After Kerr's death in 1957, his daughters donated it to Episcopal Diocese of Oregon on the sole condition to always be available to the public at no charge. The building is closed to the public.
There are many benches to sit and relax. There are no bathrooms, drinking fountains, picnicking or lawn games allowed. Parking can be limited, but its usually pretty quiet. There are short trails with steps and gravel. I would recommend using a baby carrier, but there is a smaller path if you want to bring a stroller. Kids love looking in the small pond for salamanders and fish.
This English-style garden is well maintained and has many signs indicating the names of the flowers. During Springtime you can find many flowers blooming including a beautiful wisteria located close to the parking lot. The fall foliage is also beautiful with red, orange, and yellow leaves. Kids love trying to find the biggest leaves.
Keep an eye on younger kids towards the back where it drops off. Bring boots in rainy months because grass can be muddy. Dogs are not allowed.
