These hilly, wooded trails will satisfy the outdoor adventurer inside of you!
The Lone Lake Trails are a really great choice for outdoor activity right inside the metro area. This area in general is just spectacular for walking any time of year, but I really think it shines in the fall. These trails are excellent for both walking, as well as biking. However, be aware, if you bring a stroller along or if you have really little ones, these trails have hills...while these trails are partially paved, they are not flat, paved trails. I think a small toddler learning to ride a bike would do better to be taken on a much flatter trail than this, however, our now 4 and 6-year-olds did really well riding their bikes on these trails. I can also personally vouch for taking a stroller on these trails, though beware that, depending on how accustomed you are to pushing a stroller up paved hills, you may find it's a bit of a work-out in certain spots.
A new feature of these trails is the recent addition of a single track, 4.7-mile long mountain bike trail. However, this new addition was not without its share of drama. You see, the woods surrounding Lone Lake happen to be home to a very special, very endangered animal, the rusty patched bumblebee. The City of Minnetonka worked together with the Center for Biodiversity to come to an agreement to protect this special bee both during and after the construction of the new mountain bike trail. I haven't been on this particular trail, but I've read it's really awesome.
Another special feature of these trails is where they begin and end. On the Lone Lake end, these trails begin at the beautiful Lone Lake Park and Playground. Here you'll find many amenities, including soccer fields, tennis courts, and a nicely-appointed playground. On the other end, if you walk (or bike) long enough, you'll find the Lone Lake trails connect to the equally gorgeous Bryant Lake Trails. Bryant Lake is another gorgeous park, and it's among the Three Rivers Park District's most beautiful parks. Summertime in particular at Bryant Lake means a glorious stretch of beach, plenty of grills for get-togethers, kayaking, and even paddleboat rentals.
The Lone Lake Trails are a great place to enjoy walking or biking with your family. After enjoying this gorgeous wooded area, head over to the nearby Munkabeans Coffeehouse for a bite to eat and a piping hot latte or hot cocoa.
