Louis Montaño Park is a delightful place to picnic!
Located right off the River Trail, Louis Montaño Park is a great neighborhood park. One might call it small, but mighty because what it lacks in size, it makes up for in color! Brightly painted murals, which were restored in 2018 with the help of the community and the original artist Carlos Cervantes, surround the green space. The murals, which range in size, shape, and color, depict various Aztec and Mexican imagery as well as the Lady of Guadalupe and literal serpentine walls. For kids, the walls of various heights and widths also make a great maze to explore, climb, and sometimes crawl through. A few lovely, large trees are scattered throughout the park and, depending on the time of day, create nice shade patches perfect for laying out a picnic blanket. If sitting on the ground isn’t your thing, there’s a picnic table or two scattered throughout the park.
Louis Montaño Park is a great space for getting the family—or just the kids—outside to run around, take in the fresh air, burn off some energy, while also exploring some local art. However, the park does not feature a playground and there are no public bathrooms onsite. Instead, you’ll find a very welcoming and chill neighborhood vibe, that’s great for everyone in the fam, from the parents to Fido, because, yes, leashed dogs are welcome. Though it’s a popular picnic spot, the park feels cleaned and well-cared for. The Santa Fe Boys & Girls Club sits across the street.
Spanning 2.4 miles, the River Trail loop is an easy trail for walking, running, and strollers. Leashed dogs are also welcome. The trail also connects to De Vargas Park, which has a skatepark and small jungle gym area.
