A fresh air adventure where scenic views accompany exercise and lots of fun!
The adventure starts as soon as you exit your car door! Midlothian Mines Park is suitable for all ages and activity levels. From newborns in strollers to the elderly on foot, you can walk, run, ride bikes, fish, shoot photos, or just sit and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
Immediately after the portable restrooms in the parking lot, you will see the historic Headstock from the 1800s and a classic Amphitheater built upon the park's opening in 2004. Little performers love to let their imaginations take over on this not-so-common feature, and generally other kids will join in the fun.
There are also ruins, bridges and other historical elements of the mining history throughout the park and placards where you can read about it. The beautiful scenery continues immediately along and around the lake where you may see walkers, runners, dog-walkers, and fishermen. To access the trails you can take the short route directly across North Woolridge (from the parking lot), walk over the lake and through the tunnel on the left, or follow the even asphalt path around the lake for more scenery including beautiful trees, geese, turtles, and other birds and wildlife.
The trails across N Woolridge are great for walking, hikes, and running. We wished we had taken bikes for our pre-school-aged kids. But never fear, our imaginations took over as soon as we saw a fallen tree, woods, dirt trail, and the ruins of old mines. The total loop is about 3.5 miles with many different length courses from which to choose.
