Neabsco Creek Boardwalk is a walking trail with gorgeous views of the wetlands.
The Neabsco Creek Boardwalk, part of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail, is a ¾ mile boardwalk along Neabsco Creek. The walk itself is very easy, short, and flat, making it ADA compliant, great for small children, and stroller friendly. The reason people love this boardwalk is that it goes over and through the beautiful wetlands connected to the creek. These wetlands and the Potomac waterfront are some of the most valuable natural assets in the region and have lots of historical and environmental significance. Here people can see the tall grasses that host a variety of creatures, including wood ducks, red-winged blackbirds, fish, and blue herons. There is even a bird look-out station perfect for bird watching. The boardwalk allows for a close-up view of all of these amazing animals while also teaching about the importance of wetlands. There are placards along the boardwalk serving as a scavenger hunt of sorts.
There are plenty of benches along the way for people to relax and take in all of the scenery. Another reason this walk is so great is that it links Rippon Lodge (the second oldest residence in Prince William Valley) and Leesylvania Park, both historic landmarks. Scootering, biking, and leashed dogs are welcome on this boardwalk, but there aren’t any places for the dog to use the bathroom on the boardwalk itself. A free parking lot is available at the beginning of the boardwalk, with a playground and picnic pavilion and sometimes there is a porta-potty. Just to be safe, I would recommend using the bathroom before you leave the house. Because this boardwalk is over a creek and wetlands, I would bring bug spray and sunscreen to keep everyone protected.
Unfortunately, there is a lot of trash in the wetlands, but I imagine community clean-up is not much of an option because it's over wetlands and it preserved land, so you can't venture off the boardwalk. Despite the trash issue, there are many opportunities for wildlife viewing.
