If you want a secluded place for a hike, look no further than Oatlands Historic House and Gardens.

Oatlands Historic House is a quaint building, popular for photoshoots. But the house is only a small part of this visit. The English gardens are gorgeous, and the hikes are fantastic. There are 8 miles of very well-labeled trails. You go through woods, jump over creeks and can rest on rolling hills filled with wildflowers. There is one toilet in the welcome center and one next to the garden, which is important to keep in mind before going for a long walk.

Picnic recommendation

There is no food for sale so bringing a picnic is a great idea. If you don’t feel like eating on the ground, there are a few picnic tables. There is also an English gazebo with several chairs and a couple of tables that are beautiful and very comfortable.

What to bring

Don't forget to bring plenty of water, sunscreen and bug spray. Even if you don't bring a picnic, bringing a picnic blanket; laying down after a long hike in this lovely locale is quite dreamy. Definitely bring comfortable walking shoes!

Bikes

Bikes are welcome! Solid line trails are multi-use for hikers, cyclists, and equestrians. The trails with dotted lines are for hikers only. You can always check on the online map to be sure, it's very helpful.

Tours

Older kids can also enjoy some history about the evolution of the house and gardens as well as the history of slavery on the plantation.  Best to check the website for tour times and prices. The house reopens for tours in June 2021.

Restaurant nearby

If you're still hungry, you can make a quick stop at Melt Gourmet Cheeseburgers about 12 minutes away. There is a burger for every taste! They have bison, veggie, fish and turkey burgers, and they are all delicious!
