A family-friendly trail in a National Forest near Leavenworth.
This trail is one of my main kid-friendly trails just outside of Leavenworth, Wa. It is located in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest and is about 2.5 miles out and back. This trail is equipped with a large gravel parking area right off highway 2, a maintained bathroom and a gorgeous view of the river as you exit to start the trail. This river is used for experienced white water kayaking at the peak of the summer and also as a local swimming hole.
As you start the trail you come upon a beautiful red bridge, which is iconic and delivers a really great photograph. Cross that bridge in order to start your journey! When it has rained the bridge can be flooded at times, so it would be wise if that is a potential issue to bring rain or waterproof boots, especially if rain was recently in the forecast. This hike is quite scenic and it is moderately trafficked. You can take in river views the whole way and there are beautiful rocks and cliffs off in the distance. During summer months my little ones have gotten the thrill of spotting climbers enjoying the rocks and cliffs as well. Dogs are welcome here. While strollers are possible, I suggest you look out for pieces of the old pipeline sticking up out of the trail.
There is an ample selection of lovely places to sit for a break or to refuel with a snack along the way. Always remember to keep our forests beautiful - be sure to pack it in and pack it out!
