I don’t want to sound too enthusiastic, but I believe the Quogue Wildlife Refuge (QWR) to be one of Long Island’s best, if not THE BEST outdoor location for children, teens and parents alike. The Quogue Wildlife Refuge, is open sunrise to sunset, 365 days a year, expands over 300 acres of land, and features injured wildlife cared for by local staff. QWR provides opportunities for both learning and exercise.
The QWR is free, however, immediately upon entering there is a collection box for donations. As you continue to walk, you will approach the Outdoor Wildlife Complex where injured animals unable to survive in the wild now live. After exploring the Outdoor Wildlife Complex, you and your family can decide between three different hikes allowing a total coverage of over seven miles if you so choose. The three hikes are red (3.1 miles), yellow (1.4miles), and green (0.8 miles/wheelchair and stroller friendly). As mentioned before, the QWR is open 365 days and in the winter they offer cross-country ski and snowshoe rentals!
The QWR has bathrooms on site, equipped with changing tables. No food is offered, however, located fairly in between Quogue and East Quogue, you and your family are just a quick drive away from some good local spots.
I can’t stress enough how truly amazing the QWR has been for my family and me. Whether I go with friends for a quick jog in the morning, or I take my young cousins for a half-day affair, I always leave with a smile on my face and a newfound appreciation for nature.
** If frequenting the path during high tick season (May and June), I would advise to wear high socks and a hat to protect from ticks. After all trips to the QWR, I always check my family for ticks just to assure safety.
