Take a short hike for water views before settling in for a day of beach fun at this destination park

Deception Pass is a fun destination at the northern end of Whidbey Island. It offers popular camping, hiking and beach exploration, but the real gem is located on the Anacortes side of the bridge at Rosario Beach.

Families can park in the ample lot (you'll need a Discover Pass) and take a short hike around Rosario Head for water views. The trail is less than half a mile and my toddler walked the whole way, but it isn't stroller-accessible and you'll want to hold on to little ones who like to get close to the edge of danger. You'll pass the beautifully sculpted Maiden of Deception Pass (Ko-Kwal-alwoot a), a Samish heroine who agreed to marry a man of the sea in order to ensure plentiful fishing for her people. Look up the legend before you go (there's a nice version here) because the signs are rather weather-worn. 

After your hike, head down to the beach for the tidal life waiting for you to explore. Be sure to pay attention to the directions – a yellow nylon rope guides you along a path that was established because too many visitors trampled delicate sea creatures. Peer under rocky outcroppings for your best chance to spot sea stars, anemones and sea cucumbers. The surrounding land often shields the area from large waves and kids can enjoy digging in the gravelly beach (not great for sandcastles, but wonderful for sensory play). 

Wooden tables with water views await on a grassy lawn area for your picnic lunch. The restrooms are large and clean with a changing pad, although they're far from the beach, so make sure young potty-trainers use the facilities before hitting the water. 

If you didn't bring lunch, drive 10 minutes east to the Shrimp Shack for peel-and-eat shrimp by the pound and other seafood delights. Be prepared for a wait, but outdoor seating is conducive to adults sipping a beer while they wait.
