Salisbury City Park is the perfect place for a family walk!
Salisbury City Park offers a little something for everyone. The park borders each side of the west prong of the Wicomico River. The park encompasses many of Salisbury’s best family-friendly attractions including Ben’s Red Swings and the Salisbury Zoo. Fido can also enjoy a dog park and bigger kids can enjoy the free skate park within the park grounds!
Salisbury City Park is also home to a trail that is a great option for families looking for a fun hike in the area. The loop is a total of 3 miles and will take you along both sides of the river. Depending on how much time you have, the southern part of the trail offers two options: inside the zoo or outside! If you’re in a hurry, take the .7 mile stretch outside the perimeter of the zoo. If you’ve got the day, opt to trek the .7 miles from one side of the zoo to the other.
Regardless of which option you take on the southern side of the trail that runs along South Park Drive, be aware that you will pass Ben’s Red Swings, an amazingly epic (and huge) playground. If you’ve got kids in tow, they will most certainly demand an opportunity to stop and play. If you’d rather not stop, your best bet would be to hike the northern side of the loop that runs along North Park Drive. (The trail features both paved and unpaved surfaces at various points on both sides, so plan accordingly.)
If you have younger kids in tow or just don’t have the time to visit the zoo or the expansive offerings of Ben’s Red Swings, the west side of the park has a covered pavilion with picnic tables, an arched footbridge over Beaverdam creek, an historic bandstand and a small playground, all of which little ones will enjoy. (The parking lot at 755 S. Park Dr. offers easy access. Just walk across the bridge on Beaglin Park Drive that connects South Park Drive and North Park Drive and turn left to connect with the trail).
Overall, we highly recommend checking out a map before you head out to determine which parts of the park you’d like to take advantage of. AllTrails provides a great overview of the trail as well as some of the featured attractions!
