A vast landscape awaits exploring at Settle's Ford Conservation Area.

If you’re looking to get back to nature, Settle’s Ford Conservation area is a great option. The 7,364-acre area is run by the Missouri Department of Conservation and spans an area that encompasses both sides of the South Grand River. The conservation area contains about 3,100 acres of bottomlands and 4,200 acres of uplands. Native warm-season grasses, grain crops, and trees have been planted to provide winter cover and nesting habitat for a wide variety of wildlife. Water control structures are used in the bottomlands to provide shallow water for wetland-dependent wildlife species. The area also three small intermittent streams, six permanent water streams, six fishable ponds, one fishless pond, and fourteen wetland management pools.

Given the abundance of wetlands and forests, this is a nature lover's dream. Settle’s Ford is a popular spot for birdwatchers and nature photographers. It’s also a great place to just get away from it all and enjoy some forest bathing!

The area features a designated 3.4-mile hiking trail that can be accessed by parking in the lot at the end of McCulloh Road. Depending on the time of year and whether or not the foliage has grown in, this trail may or may not be your best bet for viewing waterfowl (if that’s what you’re looking for). If it’s bird watching you’re in the mood for, try heading south on Index Road to take advantage of better views of the water.

The conservation area has one bathroom, located just inside the boundary on Index Road. One thing to note: this is a popular area for hunters. It’s a good idea to wear bright colors during hunting season and avoid wandering too much in the forest. You may also want to bring an extra set of clothes and shoes for any kiddos that may want to take a dip in the river!

Our work in Baltimore is truly a family affair. Husband and wife, Matt and Katie, work together to head up our ambassador team in Charm City. Katie is a Maryland native and has lived in the state her whole life. She moved to Baltimore in 2007 after graduating from the University of Maryland, College Park with a bachelor's degree in early childhood education. She has been working in the field of early childhood education as a teacher and family coach for the past 12 years. Katie also holds a Masters of Education in Literacy from Loyola University. She is passionate about giving kids and families the knowledge and tools that they need to thrive. Matt grew up in the Highlandtown neighborhood of Baltimore. As a city native, Matt is a great resource on all that the city has to offer. After months of helping Katie explore the city for her role at a Happy Active Family, he decided to put his love of writing to use and officially come on board as an ambassador. Matt and Katie have two girls, ages 5 and 7. They spend their weekends camping, hiking, or exploring other hidden gems in their area. Tap into their insider knowledge by downloading the app today!
