The Maryland Zoo

The Maryland Zoo is an over 135 acre zoo located in Baltimore’s historic Druid Hill Park neighborhood.  Longtime residents of Baltimore will have undoubtedly either visited or driven by the zoo as it’s been in continuous operation since 1876.  It’s the 3rd oldest zoo in the country! The zoo is home to over 200 species of birds, mammals, amphibians and reptiles, as well as super friendly zoo staff spread generously throughout the zoo’s grounds to answer questions and deliver pop up animal interactions to help kids learn about what they’re seeing.  

The zoo hosts several functions throughout the year such as a craft beer festival called Brew At The zoo and a Halloween festival called Boo At The Zoo (I’m sensing a theme…).  

The zoo has made several upgrades to some of its larger exhibits over the past few years.  The penguin exhibit has both an indoor and outdoor area where you can visit these adorable birds while watching their feedings (check posted schedules) and learn about them from staff who provide interactive Q&A during those times.  New this year is a beautifully renovated and improved lion exhibit, elephant exhibit, and giraffe exhibit. You can even feed the giraffes!

The zoo is stroller friendly and is spread across relatively level ground to help prevent any of your crew from tiring out before getting a chance to visit the Penguin Coast, Polar Bear Watch, African Journey, Farmyard, and Maryland Wilderness, the zoo’s five main designated areas.  The kids will also enjoy some hands on interaction at the petting zoo where they can brush or pet goats.

While you’re perfectly welcome to bring your own snacks you will find some great concessions in each area including the usual amusement park fair of hot dogs, popcorn, cotton candy and pretzels.  If you need something more hearty, stop by the pit beef stand or the pizzeria. 

Make sure to check the zoo’s website when planning a visit.  You’ll find tons of special events that may help you to plan a trip. Strollers and wheelchairs are available for rent and ATMs are provided on site for last minute cash withdrawals.  You’ll find clean and spacious rest rooms strategically located throughout the grounds. A note, the walk from the front entrance to the main grounds can be long for little legs. If you’d rather not make the trek, a tram is conveniently located a short distance from the entry gates, on the right hand side.

If you’re new to Maryland the zoo is a must.  Take some time to learn about the animals, conservation and Baltimore history all at the same time.
