Beautiful interactive museum with lots to see
The National Building Museum is an awesome way to spend a day in DC. The building is beautiful, and was originally the Pension Bureau, before becoming an event space where presidential balls were often held, and then eventually becoming this wonderful museum in 1985.
There are several rooms and multiple exhibits, some permanent and some rotating. Each one is just as exciting for kids as it is adults. Most exhibits include some sort of hands-on or interactive experience that is interesting for both kids and adults. There are usually five or six exhibits in the museum at a time.
I had a blast there with my three-year-old. We especially loved the PLAY WORK BUILD room where there are massive foam blocks for building forts, projects, and buildings. The idea is that it is important for kids and adults to use their use their imagination, and that in playing you can create new and cool things. There are often lots of other children for kids to socialize with in this exhibit and everyone is always having a blast.
If you're looking for food after your visit, Chinatown has much to offer. Farmers & Distillers is only a five minute walk away and offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, all farm to table! If you're in the mood for pizza, Wiseguy is also only five minutes walk and is always a good option. Looking for a sweet treat? Rita's Italian Ice and Frozen Custard never disappoints and is five minutes away!
