Thorpe Park Has Hiking, Mountain Biking, Two Playgrounds, and Tennis Courts!
There are two playgrounds at this park; the first is great for younger kids (although the equipment is a bit older) and is shaped like a fire truck. The kids can hang from the different bars or use the swings next to them. It actually has a whole row of swings, which is fantastic as any parent knows how hard it is to get kids to share those! The other play area is recently renovated with colorful new suspended playground equipment such as a rock climbing ribbon, seated merry-go-round, and a bouncy seesaw feature. It is really fantastic, but many of the climbing features are hard for younger kids to use.
The park also has tennis courts, an amazing disc-golf course, a dog park, and even a little bit of shade, which is hard to come by at most parks in Flagstaff!
One of the great perks about this park is the number of trails it has. You can start hiking at Thorpe Park and literally hike for miles. This is a great area to see wildflowers and some gorgeous scenic areas. There are a few steep grades, so make sure if you bring kids, they can hike up and down these. Also, bring plenty of water! (I know any hiker knows that, but I always feel compelled to say it!) Mountain bikers and dogs are also allowed to use the trail.
A huge bonus to this park is also the Lowell Observatory which is literally right next to the park. This is a phenomenal place to use their giant telescopes and do some pretty amazing stargazing. They also offer tours of the facility and even have solar viewing! An absolute must for any space fanatic in the family!
