You can spend a couple of days exploring the vast, wooded Umstead Park.

At 5,559 acres this incredible state park is located right in between Raleigh, Cary and Durham. The park contains 3 different lakes all of which allow fishing. There are over 20 miles of trails for either a quick nature walk or a more extensive hike into the woods. While the hiking trails prohibit other activities, there are also 13 miles of multi-use trail that allows for biking and horseback riding through one of the most scenic sections of the park.

Want to spend the night? Umstead offers tent camping from April 1- October 31st with 28 campsites that include picnic tables and grills. There are also restrooms with showers located conveniently along the sites.

Umstead has two entrances at Crabtree Creek and Reedy Creek. The visitor center at the park is happy to answer any questions or provide you with the appropriate rentals if you are planning to get out on the water in a boat!

If you are looking for a quick nature walk I would suggest Inspiration Trail! From the Reedy Creek entrance, it is a sweet .40 mile loop that follows a small stream. There are interpretive signs that identify trees and it has several benches. The park also offers several events and programs throughout the year including special hikes and classes. With so many different outdoor activities, Umstead is a great place the whole family can enjoy.
