5 Ways to Get Your Family Outside to Celebrate Moms

Published on May 06, 2022 - Updated on May 06, 2022

Although we should be celebrating moms every day (moms, grandmas, step-moms, or any mother figure in your life!), Mother’s Day is a good excuse to spend some extra time together as a family. And the best ways to spend time together are outside in the fresh air and sunshine.

Here are 5 ways you can celebrate the mom in your life while also enjoying the outdoors!

Plan a Picnic

Breakfast in bed is a classic Mother’s Day activity, but what about breakfast or lunch outdoors? It’s the perfect time of year for a picnic. Pack up a fancy (or not so fancy) brunch for mom and head to the park, beach, or even just your backyard. Check out this Plan a Picnic blog post for more ideas on how to make your picnic a success!

Pick Your Own Flower Bouquet

Is there anything toddlers and preschoolers love more than stopping to pick every flower they run into? Mom doesn’t care if it’s dandelions or wild violets— it’s the thought that counts! Take a stroll around your neighborhood and pick a bouquet of wildflowers (or pretty weeds!) for mom. Tie them with a ribbon or find a pretty glass to display them in.

Make a Card

Make mom a card— and decorate it with nature. Collect a few extra flowers to glue onto a card for mom. Or find pretty leaves, pine needles, and other nature treasures to design your own flower, heart, or spell out “Mom.” Searching and crafting will be fun activities for the kiddos and mom will love the finished product! If you’re feeling extra creative you could even try making these cute Pressed Flower Pots as a little gift.

Take a Family Bike Ride

Spend time with mom and head out on a family bike ride. It’s a great way to enjoy the day together! Check out this Family Bike Rides blog post for tips on planning your family bike ride. Find a brunch spot or coffee shop you can ride to, or take mom to a nice park for the afternoon.

Go Strawberry Picking and Bake Something Sweet

Springtime means it’s strawberry season and what better way to celebrate mom than with something sweet! Sweet treats taste even better when they’re homemade and freshly picked. If it’s strawberry season where you live, bring mom to your local berry patch and spend the morning picking some juicy berries. Then head home and bake up something delicious in the kitchen together. Try this Strawberry Banana Bread or Strawberry Oatmeal Bars. And don’t forget to bring some to Grandma’s house, too!

I am a Massachusetts native who grew up in the suburbs of Boston and on Cape Cod. As a military spouse I have lived all over the country from Florida to California, and several places in between. My family has now settled in Virginia where I am a stay-at-home mom to two awesome girls. I love to explore and hike National and State Parks, and spend tons of time at the beach with my kids, splashing in the waves in the summer and searching for shells and seaglass in the winter. I also love running, yoga and cooking!
