outdoor-adventures, hikes

The boardwalk adds a truly unique experience to this hike at Accokeek Creek. Enjoy it.

Accokeek Creek Marsh Boardwalk is an unforgettable adventure. Bring your binoculars because we spotted all kinds of birds and beavers. We saw herons, ospreys and an eagle! This is a short, 2-mile out-and-back hike. The boardwalk section of the hike is about .5 miles. Insider note, the boardwalk portion of the hike does not provide any shade and can be quite hot in the middle of summer. (Something to be aware of, we suggest this hike in the morning or late afternoon when it cools off on warm summer days). After the boardwalk sections over the tidal marsh, the hike strolls around Mockley Point, situated at the confluence of Piscataway Creek and the Potomac River. There is also an open field with picnic tables. This is a great spot to refuel but does not offer any shade. It can get quite hot in the field.

We ran into a number of people fishing on the boardwalk. If you and your family enjoy fishing, make sure to bring your poles. We saw a few big fish being reeled in.

The entrance can be a little tricky, we missed it a few times as Piscataway has multiple entrances and no exact address to this hike. Make sure to type in Accokeek Creek Marsh Boardwalk and/or follow the address below. The entrance sign (pictured below) will say Piscataway Park Accokeek Creek. Once you pull in you will drive down a long dirt road (about 200 yards). There is a small parking lot. From the parking lot you will see a sign and the start of the trail. The trail is about 100 yards long until you hit the boardwalk. Have fun!
