Alfred Caldwell is a Secluded Garden in Lincoln Park -- A Haven for Parents and a Natural Playground for Kids.
You would never know this secluded garden is just off the Lake Path in Lincoln Park. Designed by landscape architect, Alfred Caldwell, this hidden gem was designed to resemble a river meandering through a great Midwestern prairie and is an important example of Prairie School landscape architecture. The Prairie School was born in Chicago and mostly associated with a generation of architects influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright. When visiting the Alfred Caldwell Lily Pool, you can check off "culture," "nature," "kid-friendly" and "free" off the list!
This hidden garden is a haven for everyone, where many come to meditate. Do not be deterred by those seeking calm and bring your kids, as they will love playing with nature. The older littles will love climbing the rocks and exploring the paths, while parents will be amazed at the calm and beauty of this secluded garden. Many kids in preschools nearby come here with their classes during the week to learn about mindfulness.
Visiting the garden is free and beautiful all year with a preference for the warmer months. Make sure to bring your baby carrier rather than a stroller, as the paths can be difficult to manage. If you are accompanied by another adult, expect that one you will both need to lift the stroller up at different points.
From here, you are right next to the Lake Path and the beaches. You are also right around the corner from the Lincoln Park Zoo and close to several playgrounds.
