For a beautiful park to spend the day outside with the family. check out Andrew Jackson State Park.
Located in Lancaster, South Carolina, about an hour from Charlotte, Andrew Jackson State Park offers a combination of history and outdoor recreation. This is one of the state's most popular parks. The park has a museum, several history markers, hiking, a playground, a lake for canoeing/kayaking, fishing, camping, restrooms, and picnic shelters. The museum explains the history of Andrew Jackson, life around the farm, and war. There is also a replica 18th-century schoolhouse and several statues. The museum and school house are open for select hours so check the website for the latest information on open times. There are several picnic shelters and an amphitheater in this area too.
There is 2 miles of hiking trails. The first loop is by the parking lot near the museum. The start of the trail is next to the Meeting House. This is an easy walk with lots of shade. The trail does cross the road twice so you will have to look across the road for the entrance of the trail. There are also several other foot paths along the trail but stick to the trail to your right if you don't see a trail marker. The second trail you can find at the lake. There is a parking lot down near the lake as well. The trail is a short walk around the lake and crosses through the backside of the campground. Follow along the lake to continue along the trail. This trail does have a boardwalk area. Bring bug spray during the warmer months since the area stays generally wet. We did both hikes in one day and they are great for younger hikers. Neither trail is stroller-friendly so bring a carrier.
Near the lake is the playground with picnic tables, shelter, and restrooms. The campground is also near the lake and down the road from the lake parking. This is for camping residents only. There are 25 camp sites for both tents and RVs with water and electrical hookups.
Andrew Jackson State Park is a fantastic park to spend the day outside. Check it out for your next family adventure. They host several events throughout the year. Check the website for all the latest information.
