Anoka is a lovely place to wander just around a thirty-minute drive north of the Twin Cities.

This Nature Preserve is a beautiful area with 200 plus acres of land running along the Rum River Shoreline. It's located in Anoka County and is truly a hidden gem in our area. We have lived here for four years and just recently discovered this close-to-home favorite! The preserve offers a variety of hiking trails that bring you through winding areas, up some challenging terrain, and plenty of flat terrains as well. The great thing is that the trails are wide so you can spread out, and kids can run ahead but there is plenty of clearing so you can keep a watch on the little explorers! The trails are well marked. Even if you get off your loop, it's one large loop so you can always find your way back. Be sure to note that in winter you may come across cross country skiers as it is a shared trail. It is busy on the weekends but it's large enough to spread out that you will feel alone most of the time. We enjoyed a peaceful walk with the baby and dog.

There is a large parking lot with a playground located next to the lot.  There is an outhouse in the parking lot. The park is a perfect place to have a picnic lunch before or after your hike. Be sure to go to the Rum River Library before your hike to check out a Hiking Kit for the kids to explore the preserve! The kit is sure to keep kids busy and engaged while out on the trails. It’s all free too!

You won't be too far from Downtown Anoka after your adventure in nature so go check out the local shops and eats! Historic downtown Anoka naming itself "Halloween Capital of the World" and offers plenty of free parking on ramps and on the street.  We love Two Scoops for Ice cream! If you like coffee, Avant Grande is a perfect local coffee shop decorated with local artists' work!
