Black Creek Greenway Trailhead, Cary, NC, USA

run

One of the town's longest and most popular greenway systems that connects to numerous other trailheads!

Located on the northwest side of Cary, Black Creek Greenway runs seven miles in length and connects to the White Oak Greenway, which is made up of another five miles of trail. It's a wonderful spot for an afternoon stroller run or a weekend family bike ride—and you can choose to it go on for miles! This route eventually connects to the American Tobacco Trail. Both Black Creek and White Oak are part of the East Coast Greenway, which planners promise will eventually run from Maine to Florida.

Made of mostly asphalt, with some concrete sections and bridges, the trail's width spans ten feet and is ideal for walking, running, biking, pushing strollers, and it's also wheelchair accessible. Most of the route is shaded, which provides a great escape from the summertime heat, but there are a few open sections. Benches sit alongside the trail to provide rest-stops if and when needed. The trail is dog-friendly and it's also great for geocaching—if you or the kids are into that—as there are many caches along this trail.

You can access the Black Creek Greenway at the Reedy Creek trailhead, North Cary Park trailhead, Godbold Park trailhead, and Fred G. Bond Metro Park trailhead. The trail connects to numerous local parks including Lake Crabtree County Park, North Cary Park, and Bond Metro Park as well as West Cary Middle School and Northwoods Elementary School (check out the website for specific entrance locations for each of these areas).

Black Creek is a great place for the fam to stretch their legs, ride bikes, and explore nature. While you're out there, make sure to visit the connecting parks for some extra fun and adventure. Bring some snacks, or lunch, and make sure you bring water bottles—there are several potable water faucets along the route!
