There are 3,500-acres to explore at Cedarville State Forest.
Cedarville State Forest is a state forest and protected area in the state of Maryland, near Brandywine, Cedarville, and Waldorf, approximately one hour outside of Washington, DC. It offers hiking trails, horse trails, campsites, a fishing pond, hunting land, and picnic and recreation areas. There are 19.5 miles of marked trails. They wind past the loblolly pine plantations planted by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, by a charcoal kiln, and through farm areas where springs and streams were used to make "moonshine." Trails may be wet at times, plan to get dirty or bring your rain boots. You'll find the one-mile-wide Zekiah Swamp, a unique aspect to this state forest that serves as a home for many varieties of wildlife for you to view. Note: this park is used for hunting in designated areas, and visitors using sections of trails during hunting season should wear bright orange.
If family camping is something you enjoy, family camping is available from April to October. A fun fact: The Piscataway Indian Tribe made this section of Southern Maryland its winter camping ground because of the mild climate and abundance of game. There’s a lot of history in and around Cedarville State Park.
Grab a friend and enjoy a day at Cedarville Forest Park. Picnic tables and grills are available along Cedar Forest Road. Plan to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the scenery. Don't forget your hats, sunscreen, and bug spray. For a day-long adventure, plan to visit Gemeny Winery after your hike. The winery features great wines and an assortment of cheese & meat platters. There’s plenty of space for the kids to run and play.
