Clemyjontri Park All-Abilities (handicap accessible) playground in McLean, Virginia

With its unusual name, many parents and kids just know Clemyjontri playground as "that big playground in McLean." It's okay. It doesn't matter what you call it - this is one of the Arlington area's greatest playgrounds for families looking for outdoor fun for their children. (For those wondering, "Clemyjontri" is an amalgamation of the donor’s four children's names: Carolyn, Emily, John, and Petrina.)

The park, founded in 2006, was Virginia's first to be designed for children of all abilities to have a "parallel playground experience," according to the city. Amenities include a liberty swing for wheelchairs. The play area is huge, but it's not enclosed so if you're there with more than one child you'll need to keep a close eye. (If you go on a busy weekend, it's a certainty that – at some point – you will be that parent running around trying to locate your offspring.)

The playground has a shade problem in that there isn't much of it. In the middle of the summer, it will be hot. Very, very hot. If you can deal with those factors, however, this park is a great destination to occupy both very young and slightly older children.

Equipment for Children Young and Old, Timid and Bold!

The playground has a variety of options to keep kids entertained, including a maze, several slides, different types of monkey bars, tire swings, the awesome liberty swing, climbing structures, ramps, play structures (including a bus and a plane), and trails and other areas for children to run freely and explore! Opened seasonally, Clemyjontri also houses a pay-per-ride carousel in the middle of the park. It's also a great space for weekend parties or gatherings thanks to its pavilions with picnic tables that can be rented (and often are). Also, adults will appreciate the bathroom facilities, water fountains, and beverage vending machines.

Clemyjontri is about a twenty-minute drive from Downtown Washington, DC. When the playground is busy, parking can be scarce, but overflow parking is available across the road at Langley Fork Park. If you're looking for a nearby activity, Turkey Run Park is a great spot for a hike with trails suitable for kids, or Scott's Run Nature Preserve is just about five minutes away in the direction of Great Falls (the Virginia side).

For a bite to eat, The Lost Dog Cafe in McLean is about ten minutes away, and Moby Dick House of Kabob is just over five minutes from Clemyjontri.

Liz Regard was raised in Pottstown, PA and first came to DC for college. After a four-year stint in New York City in the buying office of Bloomingdales after graduating, she returned to the DC area for law school and never left. It’s been 19 years and counting! She lives in Dupont Circle with her husband, Dan, their girls, Amelia and Felicity, and dog, Rugby, and works part-time for an international trade law firm. While Liz always liked exploring the city before the girls came on the scene, having kids opened up a whole new world of adventure. Everyone was happier when they were outside, so Liz spent a lot of time online researching fun activities and destinations. She really needed Happy Active Family. Now, she’s just excited to be creating this amazing resource for families across the nation with her friend, Caitlin. In their free time, Liz and her family love to travel and are slowly trying to visit every playground in the DMV area.
