A fun playground surrounded by a little town steeped in American history!
Clifton Town Park in historic Clifton, VA is a unique train-themed playground located in the center of a quiet town. The park has open green space to run around, a beautiful gazebo, multiple play structures, and a basketball court. There is a lot of room to spread out and features that appeal to all ages.
Originally called Devereux Station, the town of Clifton began as the southern-most point of the Union Army, housing Union soldiers to protect against a Confederate invasion. Many of the houses in town are over 120 years old and most have a sign out front with their history. Look for the Buckley House where Jeff Arch wrote the screenplay for Sleepless in Seattle or the Huckbill House, home of Oscar Woody who served on the Titanic.
Parking is on Main Street or across the road next to the bright red Southern Railway Caboose marking the site of the original Devereux Station. The entrance to the park is on Chapel Street behind the Clifton Baptist Church.
The park has picnic tables, trash cans, and plenty of shade but is lacking a restroom. We like to combine a visit to this park with a stop at one of the many restaurants and cafes nearby that have restrooms for customers.
The town council voted in November 2020 to change the name of this park to Harriet and William Harris Park to honor the African Americans whose land now makes up a large portion of the town.
