Dalton Point is an off the beaten path rocky beach with shallow waters.

We randomly came across this hidden gem after I pulled over for a bathroom break along I-84 and saw a toddler and his family go down a path through the woods. I came back another day with the kids and we ventured down this path which took us to a secluded beach filled with seashells.

Dalton Point is a boat launch into the Columbia River. The exit is only accessible going westbound on I-84 and it is one mile west of the Multnomah Falls exit. You pull in and there is a boat launch straight ahead and a large parking area to the right. A vault toilet is there along with some signs about boat safety and rules.

Since this exit is mainly used for boats and rest stop for travelers, the beach area is not used often because it’s so hidden. At the far east side of the parking area look for the trail through the trees. Follow it downhill for a short distance and you’ll see the water through the bushes. The parks service does a great job cleaning up trash in the area but sometimes you might see some litter here and there.

The beach is mainly small rocks and tons of tiny seashells, but hardly any “sand” if that’s what you’re looking for. The water is very shallow for a long way out which is great for those kids who want to wade or lay in the water with very few waves and no drop-offs. My daughter loves to bring little collection bottles to take some of the seashells she finds home.

Dogs are allowed here on leash. Cell phone service is good. The beach is right alongside the highway but the trees do a good job of muffling the road noise so it feels like you’re on your own private beach.

Highly suggest a stop here in the summer if you’re looking for a secluded, not crowded, middle of nowhere type of adventure. Don’t forget your bathing suits!
