Daybreak Star Cultural Center in Discovery Park is a great educational stop.
Daybreak Star Cultural Center is a must-visit when you are at Discovery Park in the Magnolia neighborhood of Seattle. A wonderful and educational opportunity to learn about the region's Indigenous culture and history. The Cultural Center is also a major force in the community by helping to reconnect local Native American people with their ancestry. It is also the United Indians' headquarters where their mission is for all tribes to work together for justice.
The Cultural Center was built and opened to the public in 1977 and showcases some traditional Native American architecture. It also houses a permanent art collection by Native American artists. Some of the notable pieces of art are the "Blue Jay," which is a 30-foot by 12-foot high sculpture, as well as an oil painting by Guy Anderson of a traditional Native representation of a whale.
Since time immemorial, the Coast Salish people have stewarded the land and waters around Discovery Park. Learn about their culture and check out some beautiful Native art at the Daybreak Star Cultural Center before heading to check out the rest of Discovery Park.
If wanting to come just to the cultural center, there is parking directly in front of the building. However, we recommend checking out the rest of Discovery Park as well. There is a great nature-inspired playground and lots of interconnecting trails to go for a short or longer hike, including Magnolia Bluff, which is a stroller-friendly nature trail!
