Beautiful hiking amongst the trees and easy for everyone in the family.
Located in the Commonwealth area of Charlotte, this 77-acre urban hardwood forest is a perfect family-friendly hike. The two-mile trail takes you on a figure-eight loop (EvergreenTrail, Tuliptree Trail, and Creek Crossing Trail) with a section of the trail being paved. From the parking lot, there is a map of the preserve and trail system as well as two stalled restrooms that are clean. There is also a covered picnic area at the start of the trailhead. The first section is a quart--mile small loop that is paved. From there you will turn into Evergreen Trail which begins the natural surface trail for the figure eight. At the far end of the loop, there is the Winterfield Neighborhood Park. This is a perfect spot to stop, have lunch, and let the kids play on the playground. This playground features a toddler play structure and a bigger kid play structure with swings. There is a large covered picnic area as well as a basketball and tennis court. Once you have finished playing, finish up the figure eight or go back the way you came. There were several bridges and boardwalk sections along this trail. Part of this area is a wetlands, so be prepared during the summer especially if it's been raining) for it to be buggy. The tall hardwoods keep this area well shaded which will be nice during the summer heat.
This trail could be jogger, stroller, or even wheelchair-friendly. Do note that when it has been recently raining that this trail does get very muddy. It can be doable in places, but wheel equipment would get stuck. There are several benches in the trails if you need to stop and have a break. Don’t forget to look up and find some birds. This is a popular area during the spring and fall for migratory birds to escape from the city.
Evergreen Nature Preserve is only 5 minutes away from uptown Charlotte and the Plaza Midwood are with many options nearby for good local eats and treats.
