The Farm-in-the-Zoo is a unique microcosm of farm life located in the heart of Chicago's urban neighborhood of Lincoln Park.
Young children will love the opportunity to see live farm animals, taste food grown in the edible garden, and learn about nature through interactive exhibits!
This manageable, accessible space provides stroller-friendly paths within a compact cluster of farm buildings. One entire building houses several cows, their milking machinery, and a herd of spunky goats. Another contains a large green John Deere tractor, a favorite at the Farm-in-the-Zoo. Children can climb into the cab to pretend to drive and steer it. (Due to COVID precautions this exhibit may be closed temporarily). Other buildings house ponies and a family of pigs. Children will be delighted to see baby piglets snuggling with their mother and hear a rooster crowing from the chicken coop as they continue their explorations of the farm. Even when the main buildings are closed, it's fun to spot the animals loitering, eating, and playing in their outdoor pens.
A well-maintained vegetable and flower garden flourishes in the center of the area. Depending on the season and the day of the week, zoo educators may offer opportunities for young visitors to pet the goats, water vegetables in the garden, or engage in sensory play with farm-inspired objects.
Indoor restrooms are available on-site, as are outdoor picnic tables. If your family's appetites seek more substantial fare, nearby R.J. Grunts or Café Brauer offer wonderful child-friendly options for lunch and dinner. The farm's compact size makes it ideal for a quick visit with younger children, or as a stop along the way as you explore many of the other neighborhood attractions, such as the Lincoln Park Nature Boardwalk or the main attraction of the Lincoln Park Zoo.
