Ravine Park is a hidden gem in downtown Lake Bluff that immerses hikers in the loveliness of a wooded ravine.
Because of its location at the northernmost edge of the Chicago metropolitan area, Lake Bluff can be a slightly off-the-beaten path destination; it’s also a fun, easy day trip from the city or a nearby suburb. One of the highlights for nature-lovers will be a hike on the Ravine Park trail. The trail winds through a large ravine hidden within the town’s historic residential neighborhood, mostly concealed by the homes and mature trees that dominate the area.
Ravines punctuate the landscape north of Chicago along Lake Michigan. They were formed as glaciers receded from the area during the last ice age, and today, most are incorporated into private property. Lake Bluff’s 14 acre Ravine Park is one of the few ravines within a public park, allowing people to explore this unique geological feature directly.
To visit the ravine, park in downtown Lake Bluff and walk the remaining several blocks to the park entrance. Free parking can be found on the streets around the village green. There's also a paid lot at the Metra Station. Walk east on Center Avenue or Scranton Avenue, and turn right (south) on Evanston Avenue. The entrance to the park is marked simply by a small sign on Evanston Avenue, just before the intersection with Sylvan Road. To begin the walk, simply turn off the sidewalk onto the trail - younger children may be convinced they are stepping out of everyday life into an enchanted forest!
The dirt trail meanders for almost half a mile along the slightly hilly, slightly rocky terrain on the slope of the ravine, beneath a canopy of mature trees and alongside a creek bed that fills with water after rainstorms. Wooden bridges cross the creek at different points along the trail, offering a dramatic glimpse of the ravine’s steep banks.
For those seeking a nature walk, the peaceful trail offers the chance to connect with the beauty of the wooded ravine setting. In the summer, the trees and forest undergrowth create a peaceful, shady tunnel of green; in the autumn, the whole setting bursts into color. Signage along the trail provides information about the various tree and plant species, both native and invasive, to the area.
Hikers will enjoy the variation in elevation and scenery provided by the ravine’s terrain, keeping in mind that the trail’s uneven, rocky footing will be challenging for smaller children. The trail is best enjoyed by those who are steady on their feet and can walk independently. It is not stroller-friendly and wearing a baby in a carrier should be avoided by all but the most confident of hikers. The trail lacks fencing and sometimes comes close to the steep edge of the ravine, so little ones need to be able to listen to directions, and grownups need to keep an eye on them for everyone’s safety.
The trail can be exited at several points on Ravine Avenue. Continue east through Lake Bluff’s charming historic neighborhood (which used to be a summer resort, and retains the feeling of a coastal escape today) to reach a stunning lookout over Lake Michigan at Sunrise Park.
Alternatively, turn back on the trail and return to downtown Lake Bluff for a vegan treat from BeMarket or a gelato from the ice cream counter at Bonk. Head to the gazebo on the quaint village green for a mini-picnic, followed by some time on the monkey bars at the large playground at Artesian Park.
