Fir Island Farm Reserve in Mount Vernon, Washington
Fir Island Farm Reserve, located in Mount Vernon, is approximately 60 miles north of Seattle. It has over 200 acres of protected wildlife land and multiple walking trails for families to enjoy. It is also a great spot to see rare and endangered birds! A huge hit for any bird-watching fan or kids who enjoy trying to spot the different species!
This is a great place to get out into nature safely as there is no hunting in this protected area. Be advised that hunting is allowed in surrounding locations, so you may hear a gunshot or two during hunting season; however, it will be a safe distance away! The Fir Island Farm Reserve is a unit of the greater Skagit Wildlife area, and hunting is allowed in other areas.
The entire Skagit Valley is an all-season destination, but you'll find fewer crowds if you can visit outside of April. A milder climate and fields full of tasty potato and grain leftovers attract birds like snow geese and trumpeter swans starting in late November. Bald eagles watch for salmon and other prey along the rivers, especially when food sources are low in December and January.
There are a few adorable towns just a short drive away from the Reserve, where you can grab a bite to eat, do some shopping, or even hit up a winery if you want to taste some of Washington's famous wines!
Please note that a Washington State Discover Pass is required to park in this area.
