Everyone loves a good suspension bridge and the Forney Creek trail system has one along with other unique features.
Located in Denver, near Highway 16, Forney Creek Trail is apart of the Carolina Thread Trail system. There are several trail loops, a suspension bridge, and some other opportunities for fun along the trail. The 85-acres of land is owned by the Catawba Lands Conservacy The trailhead is across the street from Sally's YMCA. The trail is 1.2 miles along Forney Creek and a part of Sally's YMCA trail system. The trail has several loops to head onto so make sure you are heading in the right direction. There is a trailhead map at the entrance and I always take a picture of that before starting to be able to look back. The trail is clearly marked with several arrows and directions. The beginning of the trail is downhill and fairly eroded so if you are taking a stroller or biking this might be a good area to walk down to the flatter area. The Forney Creek Trail is considered a single-track system that can be narrow sections at times. The Sally's YMCA loops are wider and better for jogger strollers. We didn't personally use a stroller but saw a family pushing one. When in doubt bring a carrier instead. The preserve also has a pond as well as the creek system. Due to these wet areas, bring bug spray during the warmer months. The trails can get pretty buggy. During rainy seasons the trail can get pretty muddy as well so holding off after rain is best to not destroy the trail especially when biking. Near the beginning of the trail, you will see the 66-foot suspension bridge which takes you across Forney Creek. On the other side of the bridge, there are some rope swings, suspension wire balancing, and a large teeter totter to run back and forth on. My younger kids really enjoyed this section of play within the trails. On the back side of this area, the trail continues onto the Kathryn Clark Segment which is 1.3 miles long to the Catawba Springs Preserve.
Forney Creek Trail is also a part of the Butterfly Highway. So practicing good Leave No Trace techniques such as packing in and out trash including compostables, not picking wild flowers, and staying on the trail is critical in keeping these trail systems thriving. This is a good reminder to teach family, friends, and strangers to help keep a healthy environment.
Overall Forney Creek Trail is perfect for the whole family to get outside and enjoy nature. Check this place out for your next family-friendly adventure. After be sure to check out some local eats and treats. We enjoyed Geppeto's Pizza just down the road.
