Freedom Park is a historical park that has a little something for everyone.
Located northwest of downtown Williamsburg, Freedom Park has a playground, hiking and biking trails, picnic areas, and hosts the Williamsburg Botanical Gardens and the Go Ape Treetop Adventure course. This park has a rich historical background dating back to the 1650's. There is an 18th Century cemetery, historical buildings, and was also the home to one of the nation's earliest Free Black Settlements in America. There are three historically accurate recreated cabins and furnished with items authentic to the time period. The playground has two structure for both younger and older kids. The bigger structure for the older kids has several slides, steps, rope bridge, climbing, and pretend play. The smaller structure geared towards preschoolers has several slides, steps, and climbing. There is also a swing set with baby swings, traditional swings, and ADA accessible swings. There is also a free standing rock climbing structure too. The playground is surrounded by mature trees and behind the playground there is a teepee built to play around. There is a picnic shelter next to the playground.
At Freedom Park there are over 20 miles of trail in the 600-acre forest. There are two miles of multi-use trails including a one-mile ADA accessible paved trail, and 20 miles of mountain biking trails that wind through the historical sites, meadows, along creeks, and forest. The biking trails are maintained and built by the Eastern Virginia Mountain Biking Association. Trails are closed during bad weather and after heavy rains. Riders are encouraged to call 757-259-4022 to check to see if the trails are open. The paved trail is perfect for younger bike riders, scootering, and strollering.
The Interpretive Center features exhibits of artifacts discovered during the construction of the park. There are several interactive kiosks that provides visitors a visual tour of the park, history, wildlife, and history. The center also has indoor and outdoor wood-burning fireplaces, meeting room and kitchen, WiFi connection, back patio, and access to restrooms. There are several picnic tables around the center.
The park is also home to the Williamsburg Botanical Gardens and the GoApe Treetop Adventure Course. These are both great places to visit while in the park. The botanical gardens is free and a small walk from the parking lot. The GoApe Treetop Adventure Course has zip lines, obstacles, Tarzan swings, and ax throwing.
Freedom Park is a great local park and a welcoming place for visitors to venture to outside.
