Fumee Lake Natural Area is a beautiful space to enjoy all year long!
Located just east of Iron Mountain, Fumee Lake Natural Area is an 1800-acre preserve with trails and popular activities such as birding, nature photography, horseback riding, and educational opportunities. It's a popular spot for its location as it's only a few miles out from Dickinson County.
Bird watchers flock to this area for the many sitings of rare or threatened species like the Bald Eagle and Common Loon. There are also multiple plant species such as the Walking Fern, Purple Cliff-brake, Marsh Grasses, and nineteen(!) species of orchids. There are five trail sets within the natural area, which include primary trails (maintained year-round), secondary and singletrack trails (not regularly maintained, but marked), primitive trails (not maintained or marked), and snowmobile trails. Be sure to download the map before heading out to find which trail area will work best for you and your family. The most popular trails are the Little Fumee Lake Loop (1.55 miles) and the Big Fumee Lake Loop (4.45 miles).
During the winter, there is cross-country skiing and snowshoeing along the trails. There are also two snowmobile trails, which are the only type of motorized vehicles allowed on the trail. Fumee Lake Natural Area is a great space to come during each season to get a different perspective of the area.
Fumee Lake Natural Area is a fantastic spot to get outside into nature with the family. Check it out for your next outdoor adventure.
There are vault-style toilets at both of the trailhead parking lots for your convenience.
