Gillette Lake hike is a pleasant, less popular Gorge walk to a lake.
This trail is a nice change from the really popular Gorge hikes with gorgeous views or waterfalls. Since this hike walks through some clear cuts and under some power lines, it usually isn’t very busy. It is 5.6 miles round trip and about 650 feet elevation gain. A good option for carrying young kids or taking older kids that can hike distances.
You start this hike at the Bonneville Trailhead. Park and head up the gravel road, which turns to a wooded path that goes uphill. Soon you’ll have a viewpoint of the river and Bonneville Dam. This is about the only viewpoint you get on this hike.
About a half-mile down the trail, you’ll come to the junction with the Pacific Crest Trail. Turn left, and you’ll head towards the clear cut from here. About a mile in the trail, will turn to the right. Along the trail, there are several areas where the trees have been cut at different times so that you can see different stages of growth.
You’ll be hiking along the right side of a valley and gain a little bit of elevation. From there, you’ll empty onto a forest road. This road is an access road for the power lines above you. Head across the road, and you’ll be able to see the lake below. Follow the trail downhill, and the lake will be on the left.
A small area next to the lake makes for a good spot for a picnic or to let the dog play. The lake is stocked with trout if you want to pack your fishing pole. Return the way you came.
The hike has changing leaves in the fall and is pretty peaceful beside the buzzing power lines.
There are bathrooms at the trailhead, picnic tables, a Northwest Forest Pass is required, and dogs are allowed on leash. Keep in mind if you come from the Oregon side, there is a $2 toll each way to cross the Bridge of the Gods.
