bike-trails, hikes

Graham Hills Park offers winding trails for mountain bikes and hikers alike, with places to picnic too.

There are more than 430 acres of forested trails to explore at Graham Hills, perfect for mountain bikers, hikers, and casual dog walkers alike. When all is said and done, the trails, which all visitors use, total about five miles and travel through many natural habitats. The trails are well-kept and the area is quite lovely — especially in the fall, but it’s a popular place all year round.

If you and the kids are out there hiking, pay attention for bikers zooming by (the trails are used in both directions). Most of the bikers are polite and on the lookout for on-foot visitors too. The terrain can get rocky with exposed tree roots in certain areas and parts are hilly too, so it’s better for kids who are comfortable walking. It’s probaby best to leave strollers at home.

For mountain bikers, parts of the park are suitable for beginners, but because the trails are not very well-marked the trails can get harder somewhat unexpectedly. If you’re taking newer riders out, be prepared to turn back if the trail gets too ro ugh. Otherwise, this park is best for intermediate and experienced bikers. There are several areas with mounds and courses to flex your skills too. If you want an easier, more clear-cut path, Sawmill bike trail is nearby.

Several picnic areas can be found throughout the park and keep your eyes peeled for wildlife sightings. During operating hours (dawn to dusk), porta-potties are available. And leashed dogs are welcome — the park even provides bags onsite to clean up after your pup in case you run out. If you’re looking to explore, an old abandoned car is located within the park limits and is a popular spot for photos.

If you’re looking to picnic, consider picking up a wood oven pizza from Wood & Fire Neapolitan Style Pizza on your way to the park. The restaurant, which features classic and modern Italian food, is less than five minutes from Graham Hills and they offer takeout during lunch and dinner hours. If you’re eating after your park visit, Wood & Fire has a kid-friendly atmosphere, but we recommend sitting outside as it can get kind of loud inside.

And let’s be real, sometimes you and the kids need ice cream after a long day of hiking and/or biking. Luckily Cold Stone Creamery (at 64 Washington Ave.) is only a five-minute drive from the park’s entrance.
