Hollins Mill Park features walking trails, picnic tables, fishing access, and beautiful views of Blackwater Creek.
Located near the heart of Lynchburg, Hollins Mill Park is an historic park with trails, fishing access and views of Blackwater Creek and the Hollins Mill Dam. The property was originally owned by William Hollins, who operated a water-powered mill known as Blackwater Mills. Hollins later sold it during the Civil War, and then around the 1900's, the building on the property became Taylor Wagon Works. This was one of the largest and oldest wagon manufacturers in the country. The building went through several types of manufacturing until it burnt done during a fire. This history adds some unique features to the park. Some of the favorite features is the Hollins Mill Dam, tunnel, and bridges. There is also a canoe or kayak launch to enjoy paddling along the creek. You can fish right near the dam which is short walk from the parking lot. There are a few picnic tables and grills to enjoy near the water. Do note there is only port-o-potties along the trail at this park.
The trails are both paved and natural surfaces. The trail in the park leads you to the Blackwater Creek trail system through the Point of Honor trail. This 1.5- mile spur trail that passes through the park. You can walk, jog, push a stroller, and biking along the trail. The trail itself is an easy walk. The trail is mostly shaded which is great for walking in the summer. Take caution during the winter months when things can get icy. If you want to do the whole Blackwater Creek trail is around three miles to make it a full adventure.
This park and trail is a family favorite and a great place to get out in nature. Check it out for your next family adventure. As always practice Leave No Trace practices when using the trail and take only memories.
