A scenic hiking trail for families, bikers, and runners.
The Holmes Run Trail is an 8.4-mile out-and-back trail through a busy residential area in Annandale, VA. The trail, which is divided into two disconnected segments, is good for all skill levels and popular with bikers, runners, and parents with children.
Holmes Run has a little bit of everything - paved asphalt and paved trail, crushed stone, and wide enough for multiple people to walk or ride bikes. If you enjoy running, bring the running stroller for some "off road" running. There are areas where you have to cross the stream via stepping stones; it’s a fun and different way to cross a stream! Or wear your rain boots and wade through the water as you cross. But, be careful not to slip and fall, as the concrete can be slippery.
Take a long hike or spend your time playing in the stream. We love looking for tadpoles and minnows. There are a number of places to stop at playgrounds, which could help break up a hike for the younger kids. Kids and parents alike will enjoy this hidden gem.
Holmes Run Trail is close to Bailey’s Crossroads, grab a quick bite at Taza or Taco Sam after your adventure.
Insider Tip: no restrooms.
