Holton Elementary is a one-stop for all your elementary playground and rolling bike activities

Just off the Interstate and in the North Side neighborhood, Holton Elementary School is one of our favorite playgrounds in the city. The playground is suitable for all elementary ages and the asphalt, grass, and concrete ground materials accommodate accessories like strollers, bikes, and lots of rolling toys.  The playground area has two separate structures, a basketball court, a blacktop area with hopscotch and a map of the United States. There’s even a covered playground tent area where you can escape the sun. While most of the playground isn’t shaded, you can find a few trees and a bench on which to eat your lunch. However, my crew enjoyed the huge US map so much we all picked a different state “in which” to eat.

On the playgrounds, you will find your typical plastic layered fun with lots of levels and activities. There’s an obstacle course with various physical challenges-a jungle gym and monkey bars, etc. You’ll find multiple swings accommodating people of all ages and abilities, there’s a swing for any child, toddler bucket swings, and adult swings. There’s a nice rubber playground surface on a large portion of the play area.

Make sure to bring your favorite sports gear and athletic balls if you want to play a pickup game - soccer ball, basketball, etc. - this playground is also a great place for scooters, bikes, and new or experienced young bikers. The playground is open during non-school hours. This pandemic year it’s been open all year round and has really helped serve the community and neighborhood during a time where there wasn’t much to do outside.
