Small park but still lots of fun to be had.
Located in the Elizabeth area of Charlotte, Independence Park is a 19-acre park featuring a playground, walking trails, a baseball field and batting cage, a basketball court, tennis courts, a volleyball court, and several shelters. The playground features two structures, one for little ones and one for the older kids. The toddler play structure has two slides and several ways to climb up along with a shade over the top. The larger kid play area has lots of different ways to climb and one big slide. Mature trees in the area keep this park nice and shaded. The paved walkways around the park are perfect for biking, scootering, and strollers. The recently updated baseball field is great for practice or a game.
There is also a demonstration garden for programs with the Extension Master Gardeners. The entry garden provides a dramatic landscape with a design lending towards the interest and color of the 1940’s-era cinder block Armory building. The Sunny Side Garden demonstrates how little space is needed to grow vegetables. The vegetables grown in this garden provide for the local food pantries. The edible landscape uses both in-ground and raised bed methods to teach gardening skills to adults and children. For more about this program visit the Extension Master Gardeners.
Independence Park has several shelters available for rent including the rose garden and reflection pond for weddings and special occasions. The three other shelters are covered and equipped with a grill.
While this park might be small, it’s a great place for kids to burn off some energy.
