A beautiful nature preserve to enjoy all year long awaits at Lido Beach.

Located just over the Loop Parkway Bridge off the south shore of Long Island, boast a small nature preserve full of wildlife and scenic views. In 2005, the town of Hempstead completed the first of the phases to preserve the 40-acre Lido Beach site located along Lido Boulevard. The town cleaned up the area and replanted indigenous plant species, built a berm to control street noise and constructed a scenic overlook area.

There is a small circular nature path that goes throughout the preserve, a walkway out to the bay, and an elevated platform along the bay for visitors can view the preserve. There are many interpretative signs throughout the trail to help educate the public about the ecology of the area. This trail is mostly level and takes around 30 minutes to do. A jogging stroller would likely make it through most of the trails but since the trails are so short, you can likely just carry the young ones if necessary. The trail is perfect for really young hikers or just a place to pass some time in nature.

75% of the preserve is wetlands, which is an essential element of the South Shore's ecosystem. Many people come to view the wildlife, birding, and photography. The preserve is part of the Atlantic Flyway, where various species of waterfowl inhabit the marshes during spring and fall migrations. While in the spring and summer, you can find several native marsh birds who use this to raise young.

This preserve is just one of many the town planned to restore and protect.  Tidal wetlands play an important role in the ecosystem of the Hempstead estuary. Many people enjoy coming for the sunrise or staying late to see the sunset. Whatever time you decide to come, this is a great place to come and check out.
