This playground is ADA accessible and one of the best playgrounds in Staten Island.
An excellent gathering place for families, this park is named in memory of FDNY Lieutenant John H. Martinson, who was killed in the line of duty in 2008. After being renamed in 2009, the playground was reconstructed in 2013 to ensure that it was more accesible, safe, and overall provided a better experience for those in the community. The play equipment was replaced and updated, a spray shower was added, and an ampitheater was constructed that can be used to put on concerts, plays, or just for pretend. It is also commonly used as an outdoor classroom for Public School 55. The basketball and handball courts were given an upgrade and resurfaced, and landscaping, benches, and new safety surfacing were installed.
This innovative playground has plenty of great features like bouncy turf surfacing, several handball courts, basketball courts with benches on the sides, and several play structures geared toward different aged kids. The equipment is quite modern, and kids will love climbing and using their imagination on these cool structures.
John Martinson was a native Staten Islander who began with NYPD and eventually moved to the Fire Department and became the Captain of his unit after working in some of the busiest ones in the city. He was killed in an apartment building fire, ensuring that the rest of his team was out to safety and refusing to leave until he knew they were out of the building, although he himself did not make it out.
