Many activities in one location with a playground, recreation center, and walking paths.
Located 15 minutes south of Charlotte uptown, Marion Diehl Park and Recreation Center has activities for the whole family. This 79-acre park has a recreation center, playground, tennis courts, paved walking trails, and several picnic shelters. The playground is by Tyvola Senior Center. The playground features a large climbing web, a small play structure, and a couple of climbing structures. Next to the playground is outdoor workout equipment. This is a perfect way for both you and the kids to get some exercise. The equipment features lat pulldown, shoulder press, cross trainer, leg press, chest press, stationary bike, elliptical, and arm cycling. Then take a walk on the almost 3 miles of paved walkways around the facilities. Another smaller play space can be found right next to the Marion Diehl Recreation Center. This small area has astroturf, a couple of swings, rocks to climb, a seesaw, and a spin-around carousel.
The recreation center features a year-round pool, kitchen area, and full-size gymnasium. The pool is a 25-meter, 6-lane pool with a spring diving board and wade-in area. The recreation center offers a variety of programs and classes, including specialized instruction for adults and children with physical disabilities. Currently, due to the pandemic, the recreation center is closed but hoping to reopen in the next few months.
The Marion Diehl Recreation Center opened in 1980 and is named in honor of Marion Diehl, who served as the Director of Charlotte Parks and Recreation for many years. The area is also home to the Queen's University of Charlotte Sports Complex. This sports complex is one of the largest in the region and offers a world-class, multi-sport championship field, cross country course, grass pitch field, and large conference center. Many NCAA-sanctioned sporting events for national and regional sports have happened here. One of the fields is adaptable for use by disabled athletes.
This park is also across the street from Little Sugar Creek Greenway (the Tyvola Road segment) and just down the road from Park Road Park and the South Park area of Charlotte. There are many activities to do in this area of Charlotte so come on down and dive in for a full day.
