Merry Go Round at Griffith Park is a historical family attraction that features beautifully carved horses and an organ accompanist.
Located in Griffith Park, between the Los Angeles Zoo and the Los Feliz park entrance, you'll find the original inspiration for Disneyland, the Griffith Park Merry Go Round. It is hard to miss, as the carousel's organ is known to be the largest band organ accompanying a carousel on the West Coast. You can hear its music throughout the majority of Griffith Park. Once exiting the 1-5, you'll see plenty of signs to guide you along your route. Follow the posted signs to the Merry Go Round parking lot, it is clearly marked.
Once parked, it is a short walk down to the historic carousel. This carousel has been a Los Angeles family attraction for over five generations, which you can tell by the incredible detail in the carvings. They have done a beautiful job of preserving this attraction. This particular carousel has 68 horses, ALL JUMPERS. This way all children can enjoy selecting a horse that jumps, not fighting over who gets the stationary one! They also have a few sleighs for infants or older grandparents.
The Merry Go Round is a quick little stop, but it is a great addition to picnicking or playing at the nearby playgrounds. If you are looking to make a full day of it, take the Fern Canyon Trailhead at the parking lot to Old Zoo Loop Trail, a trail that takes you on an eerie historical hike through abandoned animal enclosures. This is a hike you definitely want to check out!
