Montavilla Park offers 9.5 acres of ample green space to run around and enjoy the sunshine.

There are two softball fields, a soccer field, and an enclosed futsal court that the Portland Timbers donated in 2014. The sprawling green space is great for tossing a frisbee, playing catch, or wearing the kids out with a game of tag. The futsal court, in particular, is a beautiful spot for practicing soccer with younger kids, as it’s essentially a miniature soccer field, and the walls ensure the ball can’t roll too far away.

Half a dozen picnic tables are spread throughout the park, each on its cement pad. Tall trees provide some shaded spots to lay a blanket in the summer, and the paved pathway from the parking lot to the playground makes stroller-pushing easy. The play area has all the classics: a tire swing, a play structure with a twirling slide for older kids, and a smaller structure with a double slide for the toddler crew. There’s also a giant bouncing seesaw, two regular swings, two baby swings, and a couple of standing spinners.

The Montavilla Community Center is located adjacent to the playground. Restrooms are accessible inside the community center during office hours (currently Monday-Friday 9 am-5 pm, closed weekends). The community center also has an outdoor pool to enjoy during the summer months. Check the Portland Parks & Recreation website or call 503-823-4101 for pool opening dates and family swim hours.

Turn your afternoon into a delicious evening adventure by trying out one of the local restaurants nearby! Burgerville, a PNW chain, is just across the street, the highly-rated East Glisan Pizza is down the block, and there’s a new food cart pod called “The Yard at Montavilla” just 0.3 miles away. Each food cart in the pod is independently operated, so days and hours of operation may vary. However, there is an incredible variety of cuisines, including East African, Vietnamese street food, Poke bowls, and even Philly Cheesesteaks.

Hi there, I’m Alayna! I spent my childhood in rural Wisconsin but have moved around quite a bit since — Pennsylvania, Texas, Argentina, Washington, Oregon and now Virginia. Community and the outdoors are two things that, wherever I’ve lived, have always been important to me. I have a degree in Community, Environment, & Development from Penn State and previously worked in the non-profit sector. Currently, I’m lucky to be able to stay home with my two young daughters. Before kids, my husband and I enjoyed hiking, camping, backpacking, and travel. The latter two don’t happen quite as often anymore, but hiking and camping with the kids are two things we’re still really passionate about! I’m excited to get to share some of our favorite spots with you.
