In the "Top 10" trails listed by the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, you don't want to miss the Orange Heritage Rail Trail.

Stretching from Harriman across to Middletown, this 18 mile trail is great for walking, biking, scootering, and rollerblading. This is the first multi-use asphalt trail developed in the parks system. The 10-foot wide trail takes you through scenic vistas, bird and wildlife sanctuary, historic landmarks, next to streams, meadows, and family-friendly communities. The trail makes it easy to stop in the cities or villages to enjoy local eats and treats. The trail is mostly shaded which makes it a great outdoor activity during the summer. There are benches along the way so you can stop and rest. You can rent bikes in Monroe and Goshen to use along the trail.

In Goshen, there is a creamery right next to the trail as well as shops, restaurants, and the Harness Racing Museum & Hall of Fame. In Monroe, you can access Airplane Park and Ruach Hachaim Park from the trail as well as many shops and restaurants. The Green Onion in Chester, just off of the trail hosts evening events and a farmers market every Saturday during the growing season. You will even pass by the Jack and Louise Birnberg Nature Preserve.

Following trail etiquette makes for a pleasant time on the trail. When biking you should warn walkers that you will be passing on the left. Walkers should use the right side when walking and not use the whole path. Use "leave no trace" concepts and pack your trash out or find a garbage bin along the trail

Here is a list of access points and parking areas: Ryerson Rd, New Hampton; Hartley Rd, Goshen; St. James Place, Village of Goshen: Chester Depot Museum, Chester; Airplane Park, Monroe; Park and Ride Lot B, Village of Monroe; River Rd, Harriman.

This trail is particularly beautiful in the fall for the changing of the leaves. The Orange Heritage Rail Trail is a great outing for families locals and visitors alike to enjoy the day.
