Escape the city and relax in nature at Paris Mountain State Park.

Located north of Greenville, Paris Mountain State Park has something the whole family can enjoy. Paris Mountain State Park is one of 16 South Carolina Parks built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. This 1,540-acre park has activities such as hiking, biking, swimming, camping, picnicking, fishing, and more. There is so much to do that you will want to come back time and time again.

In the park, there is 17 miles of hiking and biking to be enjoyed. Paris Mountain is considered a monadnock mountain which is a mountain that rises up out of otherwise flat land. Although you cannot hike up Paris Mountain the trail lengths and abilities make it so there is a trail for everyone to enjoy. We personally did the Sassafras Loop Trail which was a good 2.3 mile loop with mild elevation changes. You walked through the woods, over creeks, and through a piney forest towards the end. There are signs for bikers to go one way while hikers go another. This way both can share the trail easily and be seen. Do note that bikes are not allowed on trails on Saturdays.

The state park also has four lakes which are the Lake Placid, Mountain Lake, Buckhorn Lake, and North Lake. At the visitor center, there is a lake beach swimming area that is open during the summer on Lake Placid. You can also fish at Lake Placid and North Lake (a two mile hike to access) with a proper fishing license. At the visitor center, you will find inside a nice nature display, merchandise, and a park ranger to tell you which trails are best. Outside there is the restrooms and a great covered sitting area with rocking chairs to sit back and relax while enjoying the views. They offer several programs, tours, and educational outreach. You can also rent paddle boats, canoes, and kayaks during the summer to explore the lake. Just a short walk away from the visitor center, near another parking lot, you will find a playground. This area is well shaded and has a large play structure with many slides, ladders, climbing, steps, and tunnel. There is also a large open green space here as well. This is a great spot to come after hiking to play and have lunch or a break from swimming.

Want to stay a weekend or a week at the campground? They have both tent and RV camp sites with water and electric hookup along with bath houses.

Paris Mountain State Park is simply beautiful and has something the whole family will enjoy. Check it out the next time you want an escape in the woods. You won't be disappointed.
