A scenic overlook with amazing views. This park is one place you are going to want to check out.
Located just east of downtown Winston-Salem and just south of Reynolds Park, Quarry Park offers a gorgeous view of an old quarry. The park's focal point is the overlook pier that extends over the eastern side of the quarry and gives you an amazing view of the city. The pier offers views of the deep blue waters of the old quarry that gives this park its name. Quarry Park has several overlook locations, which give you different perspectives of the rock faces. There are many benches and several picnic areas around the quarry to sit at and take in the views.
This spot was operated as the Piedmont Quarry from the mid-1920s until the early 1980s. This quarry was the first of its kind in North Carolina. When it opened, it provided crushed rock for buildings and roads. When work stopped at the quarry in the 1980s, water slowly started to fill the space. The quarry was finally donated to the city in 1998. It was originally used as a place for residents to drop off yard waste and other organic material. The material was then composted for residents to pick up at a later date. In 2012, the city started looking at other ways to use this space, and by 2016, bonds were approved to make Quarry Park a reality. The high cliffs still ring the site giving the quarry an amazing view. The pathway up to the viewing pier has different rock formations and plaques talking about each one. This is a great way to show children the different rock formations and where they came from.
On foot or bike, you can access the Waughtown area on one end and the Peachtree Greenway on the other. Restrooms are located under the viewing pier.
This is a must-see as a visitor and a nice place for locals to visit regularly. There are future plans to upgrade this space and I can't wait to see what they do with it. Go check it out. You will be amazed.
