San Felipe del Morro Castle is an impressive fort and museum near Old San Juan.
Families seeking something fun to do within walking distance of Old San Juan in Puerto Rico will adore visiting San Felipe del Morro Castle (also called El Morro). Here, you can meander the vast grounds and soak in views of San Juan Bay. This large green space is a great place for families to walk and run about, even if you don't go inside the fort. Outside, it is also common for people to fly kites due to the high winds. While vendors may have kites for sale nearby, it’s recommended to pack your own (just in case). Then, you can also walk along the fortified walls for fun photo ops and great views of the water down below. As you walk along, it is easy to imagine the generations of soldiers who would have marched here.
Inside El Morro, learn about Spain's military endeavors in Puerto Rico from colonization to WWII. After entering, you can explore the different rooms and exhibits on your own. Alternatively, park rangers also lead engaging tours (great for in-depth information about what you are seeing, or for homeschool/world school families exploring this area). Each section includes recreations of a day in the life of a soldier, including barracks, the dungeons, kitchens, and more. In fact, you can even see some of the original cannons facing the ocean!
Children under 15 years of age receive free admission. Additionally, entrance tickets also cover admission to the nearby Castillo San Cristóbal, which is also worth visiting if you have more time in the area.
